Why I Quit my Corporate Job

Why I Quit my Corporate Job

Jan Griffiths of Gravitas Detroit explains the impact 2 young women had in her life and her decision to leave her corporate job and start her own business - Gravitas Detroit

These young women, what they did for me is, and this really will speak to the idea of reverse mentoring and getting inspiration from different sources, they saw something in me that I knew was there, but really didn't want to acknowledge because it didn't fit the mold. When I was speaking to a group of people at work when I was working with a team, doing some sort of motivational pitch, they saw that I came alive and it was something that I absolutely loved to do, and they worked tirelessly with me to put together team off sites, industry presentations, and they would joke around with me and they would say, "You should do this for a living." Really? Come on. I'm at the top of my game here, right? I have got this great corporate job, life is good. Why on Earth would I change that? And they said, "No, you really should think about this." So okay, I did. And then that rebellious Welsh spirit kicked in. And I love the fact that I'm Welsh, but sometimes it's a bit of a curse. And that rebellious spirit said to me, "What are you doing? "Why are you trying so hard to fit this mold "of a corporate VP when you know that your heart "and your belief and your passion is all about leadership? "You love leading people "and helping people become better leaders. "That's what you need to do." Well, what? I have worked all my life for this dream. I have gotten this great job. Life is so good right now. Why would I change it? And the rebellious spirit said, "No, you need to follow your passion. "You need to leave this corporate job "and start your own business "and take your income to zero overnight." What, what? Who would do something that ridiculous? I'm supposed to follow a path just like I was supposed to follow the farming path and marry the farmer next door. I'm supposed to stay in this corporate job, as we all are, until we get to this point called retirement or a pot of money that we have, right? And then we retire. Well, what are you gonna do in your 50s? Nobody quits their job like this in their 50s. Well, I did. I did. And I launched Gravitas Detroit and it is a company that is truly committed to developing the leaders that we will need to take this industry into the future. Leaders with gravitas.
