Phil Ideson spent his early career in automotive purchasing at Vauxhall, Ford, and Visteon before moving into pharma, consumer products, technology, and financial services. Looking back, he says a lot of automotive processes were built to maintain control, not to drive an outcome, and purchasing teams waved it in people's faces because that is where the power lay.
His fix starts with a question most teams skip. What is this process for? What output is it trying to drive, and can a different process get you the same result or a better one? Jan connects it directly to the shift from command-and-control to authentic leadership, and to the habit of optimizing within the silo rather than asking what the business is trying to achieve.
